Meet the Artist

Biki Maragni

Biki was drawing before she knew to call herself an artist. A classmate once recalled her as "the girl who could draw the beautiful birds" back in second grade. The passion took hold for good at thirteen, when she sketched Sophia Loren off a magazine cover and realized this was something she wanted to chase. She went on to major in Art Education in college.

A Texas native, Biki moved to Benton, Illinois as an adult and has called it home ever since. She painted part-time for years while working in public service and raising three children, then turned to painting full-time in 2003. She now works from her studio in Benton, open by appointment.

Her subjects range from the Shawnee Forest, Ferne Clyffe, and Garden of the Gods near home to scenes gathered on travels through Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. She paints wet-in-wet, often working plein air before finishing in the studio, and counts Monet, Van Gogh, Nikolay Feshin, and Joaquín Sorolla among her biggest influences, artists whose light, color, and loose brushwork still shape how she sees a scene.

Exhibits & Museums

Biki's work has been shown in local, regional, and national exhibitions and has received awards along the way, including several solo exhibits around Southern Illinois. Her paintings have also been selected for museum competitions, including the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mount Vernon, Illinois, where three of her pieces were juried into the Cedarhurst Biennial.
